Orange Box has a new
aircraft in the budget-beating line. The 1/48 scale aircraft kit is an
Me262 variant that has a unique appearance. The Me262A-1/U4 was known
as Pulkzerstörer (“formation or pack destroyer”), a bomber interceptor
armed with a powerful 50mm cannon. This weapon was supposed to allow
the interceptor to attack bomber aircraft and formations at long ranges
so that it wouldn’t be threatened by bombers’ own armaments. This
Rheinmetall-Borsig Mk.214 cannon fired shells that weighed 1.5kg, and
the heavy 2400kg recoil was cushioned by a hydraulic damper. The gun
occupied the entire front section of the aircraft’s nose, and even then
it still protruded from the nose. Because of this, the nose wheel had
to be redesigned so that it rotated 90º when retracted. A single 50mm
round was estimated to be sufficient to down an Allied bomber, but this
was never proven since the Me262A-1/U4 never entered combat. Two
prototypes were constructed and flown from Lager-Lechfeld in mid-April
1945.
This formidable looking Messerschmitt jet is produced accurately in
1/48 scale. The form and shape of this prototypical aircraft is
perfectly captured in plastic, as is the impressive Mk.214 cannon. The
bonus parts in this Orange Box item are a detailed engine. The
inclusion of these new engine elements allows an airfield maintenance
scene to be created, with all the engine component on show. The kit
also contains a brand new set of decals from Cartograf. Brimming with
detail, this is the ultimate kit of Germany’s ultimate bomber-killer!
