Dragon Warbirds is offering a stunning 1+1 set of the famous Bell X-1. the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight Modellers will get two complete 1/144 scale models of the X-1 in the box But before describing the models. a bit of background about this record-breaking aircraft would be useful. Development of the X-1 started in 1945 and it was inspired by the shape of a Browning 50-cal machine gun round. Essentially, the Bell X-1 was a bullet with wings. propelled by a four-chamber rocket engine. The first supersonic test flight occurred on 14 October 1947 with the famous Captain Chuck Yeager at the controls. and he achieved a speed of Mach 1.06 (1,299km/h) in his X-1.
Dragon is offering two 1:144 scale plastic models of the Bell X-1. The first is a realistic replica of this supersonic craft, while the second has a unique transparent fuselage that shows off the “innards of the X-1". Details on these models are masterfully recreated in miniature, including full cockpit detail.
