In recent weeks Dragon launched the first 1/72 scale plastic kit of a
German soft-skin vehicle, the Kfz.70 Personnel Carrier (Item No.7377).
Dragon is now following up this popular release with another important
German soft-skin vehicle from WWII. The new item is a Schwere Einheits
PKW A.U. Horch. This 4x4 heavy car was produced by Auto Union and Horch
from 1938 onwards, and it served in all theaters of WWII. The original
Type 1a had four-wheel steering, while the later Type 1b produced from
1940 onwards had regular front-wheel steering. This vehicle possessed
four-wheel drive, but production ceased in 1941 as part of German
efforts to standardize production. The personnel carrier was powered by
a V8 Horch engine of 3.823-litre capacity.
As the first Horch vehicle in the 1/72 kit set range, Dragon’s model
naturally makes use of 100% new toolings. The open-topped body (which
contains three bench seats able to accommodate five passengers and the
driver) is made as a single slide-molded piece in order to simplify
construction and ensure perfect alignment. So as to produce an
incredible level of detail, the floor plate and its tread pattern is
made of photo-etched metal. There is also an MG34 machine gun provided
on a pintle mount for antiaircraft duties. The kit beautifully captures
the look and stance of this Horch 4x4 heavy car. When modelers realize there
are two, not just one, models inside the box, the kit becomes even
more compelling!
