| Space Shuttle Challenger

<The Challenger launched
on its first voyage in 1983. It completed the mission of first
spacewalk of the Space Shuttle program and was the first satellite in
the Tracking and Data Relay System constellation. It was the first
orbiter to launch and land at night on mission STS-8 and Challenger was
the first to carry two U.S. female astronauts on mission STS 41-G. It
made the first Space Shuttle landing at Kennedy Space Centre. After
nine successful missions, the Challenger launched on STS-51L on January
28, 1986. 73 seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded. The
loss of Challenger did not negate the work of NASA but encouraged it to
continue to better mankind in space flight and in life on Earth.
