In 1967 the Opel Commodore A, based on the Opel Rekord C, came out. Not
least due to the Opel success in motor racing demand quickly arose for
a more powerful and sporty version of this car at the high end of the
medium range. Opel reacted with the top model GS/E, which came on the
market in 1970, had electronic fuel injection and a capacity of 150
bhp. The roomy interior, that offered ample space for four people with
appropriate leg-room, also had remarkably comfortable wide seats. The
GS/E was in no way a simple family car but it had the capability. The
hardtop coupé without B pillar and with matt black bonnet and black
vinyl roof already had the aggressive appearance of the "first German
muscle cars". The inconspicuous spoiler in front of the front wheels
was not just a decoration, but an essential accessory required to
generate the necessary downforce at 200 km/h. But it was primarily the
powerful straight six engine that made the Opel into a real sports car.
From 4000 rpm, the 2.5 litre engine showed what was hidden under the
bonnet, including the required sound shift. It accelerated the car from
0 to 100 in 9.5 seconds and - even more importantly - had an impressive
sprint up. The rigid rear axle demanded a quick countersteer on heavy
curves, a feature that pleased the sportssports enthusiasts among the
clientele as much as the opulent appearance of the car.
