| C-160 Transel
For some years the
Transall Fleet of the German Luftwaffe has been used mainly to resupply
German ISAF Troops serving in Afghanistan. Because the aircraft are
exposed to specific dangers, special protective measures have to be
taken to protect them. In the main this means the attachment of
external mounting points for Chaff and Flare Dispensers in two pods
under the wings, various sensors and a large array of ECM (Electronic
Counter Measures) equipment. More than forty years after its maiden
flight the C-160 Transall still has an excellent reputation amongst its
crews as a safe and reliable transport aircraft. It absolved its maiden
flight on 25 March 1963. The first of a total order of 160 aircraft
were delivered in May 1967. Of these aircraft 110 Transall C-160D were
built for the German "Luftwaffe" and 50 C-160F France. Mass production
in Germany finished on 26 October 1972. Due to a further requirement in
France another 33 Transall were built between 1978 and 1985 in various
configurations. Twenty-five of these aircraft were built as the C-160NG
(New Generation) version and are recognisable by their aerial
refuelling probe above the cockpit. Whilst all aircraft in this batch
are able to be air-refuelled, only 10 however are fitted with a
refuelling unit which enables them to refuel other aircraft. The
Transall will without doubt remain the workhorse of both air forces for
a few years hence until the introduction of its successor - the A400M.
