The ballista is actually
a further development of known Graeco-Roman and Medieval siege engines.
It was designed to hurl stones over a long distance in order to breach
enemy walls. Unlike other war machines the ballista was a small weapon
that packed a large punch. The energy to launch the stones is created
by the extreme tension in the ropes that are tightened by a screw.
Leonardo's ingenious invention has now been launched as a fine wooden
model made in accordance with the original drawings and historical
models in the Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in
Milan.
