| 04663 E-4B Airborne Command Post
The E-4B is a military
version of the Boeing 747-200. It serves with the USAF as an Airborne
Command Post in crisis areas. Operating as a National Airborne
Operations Centre the E-4B ensures continuous Command and Control for
the U.S. Government in times of war or major natural disasters, should
land-based communications systems fail. In this role the aircraft
provides a modern, well equipped command, control and communications
centre with excellent survival characteristics. The main deck is
divided into six operating areas. It can accommodate up to 114
personnel. The E-4B is fitted with defensive equipment to counter EMP
(Electro-Magnetic Pulse) which is emitted during nuclear explosions.
The aircraft's "Time on Task" can be extended up to three days with the
use of air-to-air refuelling. Of the four aircraft of this type, one is
constantly at the "Combat Ready" state.
