The German Commando Special Forces (KSK) officially went into service on 20th September 1996. The task of the KSK, in addition to the execution of long-distance reconnaissance missions and combat behind enemy lines, is defence against terrorist threats within the terms of engagement of the forces and the release of hostages within the framework of evacuation missions. The KSK, which is 1000 soldiers strong, comprises four commando companies and one long-distance reconnaissance company. After missions to capture war criminals in Bosnia and Kosovo, there were latterly over 100 KSK troops involved in seeking out Al'Qaida terrorists in Afghanistan.
