After the massed appearance of the Soviet T-34, the German side developed the armoured fighting vehicle V "Panther" (Sd.Kfz. 171), Type D of which was used for the first time in 1943. At the end of 1943 necessary improvements gave rise to the Type A. With its 75 mm tank cannon 42 L/70, by the end of the war, the "Panther" had proved its superiority over most enemy battle tanks. The V-12 Maybach petrol engine developing 700 hp gave the 43,000 kg "Panther" a top speed of 55 km/h. It had a crew of 5.
