| Tamiya Model Kit - Renault 5 Turbo Rally Ltd Car 24027
In 1975, Renault made an
announcement to enter the World Rally Championship with a new machine
based on their best selling Renault 5. Powering the machine was a 250hp
4-cylinder OHV 1397cc turbo-charged engine which was mid-mounted for
optimized weight distribution. Double wishbone suspension featured
front torsion bar springs and rear coil springs setup to allow for
superb off-road performance. In October 1979, the machine made its race
debut at the Giro d?Italia and the following year saw it make WRC debut
at the Tour de Corse. At the opening round of the 1981 WRC season, the
Monte Carlo Rally saw the Renault demonstrate its great potential to
claim the first victor.
About
the Renault 5 Turbo
The rear wheel drive R5 Turbo Rally car driven by J. Ragnotti in the
1981 World Rally Championships was greatly modified from the production
vehicle. The 4-cylinder overhead valve engine featured a Gallet T3
single turbo system and a Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection system
producing an impressive 250hp output. The 5-speed transmission and
engine were centrally mounted for excellent weight distribution and
handling, no matter the surface. The Renault 5 Turbo excelled in the
icy conditions during the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally, taking an unexpected
victory ahead of its 4WD rivals such as the 1981 Audi Quattro.
